Be Summer Safe and Secure Those Weapons

As summer kicks off and children are at home or in others homes it is important to emphasize gun safety as a critical part of a safe summer for all.

Most of us have owned and handled guns safely for years, however, we must always keep in mind the youngest among us who do not yet understand proper storage and handling of firearms - Children. Thousands of child related gun accidents occur each year, most of which could be eliminated by teaching and practicing practical gun safety techniques. Vault Pro is a proud member sponsor of Project Child Safe, which teaches gun safety throughout the country.

Project ChildSafe

Project ChildSafe®, a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation®, is making a national call to action urging firearms owners to make safe firearms storage a priority this summer and beyond. To help reinforce this effort, Project ChildSafe provides a library of videos and tools that can help families facilitate important conversations about gun safety — regardless of whether they have a gun in their home — in an effort to help prevent firearms accidents.

Storing firearms responsibly, in homes and vehicles, is the number one way to help prevent firearms accidents, theft and misuse ,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF’s CEO and Chairman of the Project ChildSafe Foundation. “ As summer begins, it’s a time of year when kids spend much more time in the home and in the car, so it’s especially important for gun owners to make sure they’re properly securing firearms.

Project ChildSafe and NSSF are launching the effort to coincide with National Safety Month, observed every year in June. The call to action goes beyond asking individual gun owners to store firearms responsibly when not in use and urges the entire gun-owning community to share and promote Project ChildSafe numerous resources that can help educate adults and children everywhere on how to practice firearms safety.

Safe and proper storage is the #1 way to prevent firearms accidents at home

PROPER FIREARMS STORAGE

As a firearm owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that guns in your home are stored where they are inaccessible to children or other unauthorized persons. Hiding a gun in a closet, drawer or similar location is not safe storage. Safe storage is employing precautions and multiple safeguards that provide an additional barrier against unauthorized use.

Firearms should be stored in a locked safe, gun vault or storage case. The storage location should be inaccessible to children.

Gun locking devices render firearms inoperable and can be used in addition to locked storage. If firearms are disassembled, parts should be securely stored in separate locations.

Ammunition should be stored in a locked location separate from firearms.

Thoroughly double check firearms to confirm that they are unloaded when you remove them from storage. Accidents could occur if a family member borrows a gun and returns it to storage while still loaded.

Ideally, cable-style locks, like those in the Project ChildSafe Safety Kit, should be used in addition to primary storage system like a gun safe or vault. Reference the Project ChildSafe safety brochure from the kit for more information about properly installing the Project ChildSafe gun lock on various firearm types, safe handling and storage.

Project ChildSafe is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation to promote firearms safety and education. They are committed to promoting genuine firearms safety through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits to communities across the U.S. Working together with gun owners, law enforcement, educators and partner organizations, Project ChildSafe has already reached tens of thousands of communities and individuals on proper, logical gun safety procedures.

We encourage all gun owners who have children in their households to look for a Project ChildSafe program in your area.

Safety

Millions of Americans own firearms and more people are choosing to become gun owners every day. At the same time, crimes and accidents with firearms have been decreasing. Help Project ChildSafe keep this trend going in the right direction with these safety precautions.

Project Child Safe Basic Gun Safety

Following are a series of basic gun safety rules offered by Project ChildSafe. We encourage you to use these as a first step in educating children on proper gun safety techniques.

Handling

Before handling any firearm, familiarize yourself with these safety procedures:

Know how the firearm operates — including safely opening and closing the action of the firearm, and removing ammunition from the gun or its magazine. Review the gun’s owner’s manual, or for free safety and operating instructions, write to the manufacturer or visit its website.

Remember, nearly all firearms accidents in the home can be prevented simply by making sure that guns are kept unloaded and secured when not in use, with ammunition stored in a separate location.

The Three Basic Rules:

·Always keep a gun pointed in a safe direction, even when handling an unloaded gun — so that if it were to fire it would not result in injury.

·Never assume a firearm is unloaded. Make sure it is unloaded by opening the action and looking into the chamber(s), which should be clear of ammunition; if the gun has a magazine, carefully remove it before opening the action.

·Always keep your finger off the trigger, even when handling an unloaded gun. Your finger should rest outside the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. The only time you should touch the trigger is when you are ready to safely fire.

As one of the many millions of responsible gun owners in this country, we understand the need for safety when handling and storing firearms. We all know the first rules of safe gun handling: Always treat a firearm as if it were loaded. Always check to see if there is a round in the chamber when handling a firearm. Always point the firearm in a safe direction in case of accidental discharge. As adults we teach these safety tips to young people who will be the firearms owners of the future. Unfortunately, children may not fully grasp the importance of these rules and may obtain access to firearms that have not been properly secured. This can lead to tragic incidents. Always make sure your weapons are safely secured when not in use. We should all follow the simple steps outlined below and supported by national gun rights groups, such as: NSSF and their ProjectChild Safe program, and the NRA. • Unloaded firearms should be stored in a locked gun safe when not in use. The storage location should not be accessible to children and secured with a locking mechanism with a combination only known by the responsible adult owner of the firearms. • Ammunition should be stored separate from firearms in a secure container, ideally in a safe. • Gun locking devices, such as a cable-style gun lock can provide an added layer of security. • Do a thorough check of ALL firearms being stored to make sure they are completely unloaded. This additional step can prevent accidental discharge when removing firearms from storage. We are proud supporters of the 2nd Amendment, which gives us the right to keep and bear arms. We also feel a great sense of responsibility to make sure we keep those arms safe and secure when not in use. Vault Pro safes far exceed all DOJ requirements and provide the best protection against break-ins and fire.
