Frequently Asked Questions About Vault Doors

Before purchasing a vault door, it's essential to ask critical questions regarding structural compatibility, the size of the clear opening, the type of operation (inswing versus outswing), fire ratings, and lock reliability. Verifying these details helps avoid expensive structural retrofits and guarantees that the door aligns with your security requirements.

Questions You Should Ask Before buying a Vault Door

All our doors are engineered and built to exceed all  FEMA 320 & 361, ICC-500 Recommended Standards for Use in Storm & Tornado Shelters.

Reach out to us for a complimentary consultation to identify the door that best meets your requirements.

  • Q. Are vault doors rated for storm shelter and FEMA and ICC compliant?

Yes. Vault Pro vault doors are engineered and built to exceed all FEMA 320 & 361, ICC-500 recommended standards for use in storm & tornado shelters. Vault doors are for indoor installation only.

  • Q. Are Vault Doors Bullet Proof?

Not all vault doors come with bulletproof protection as a standard feature. Beware of flimsy, imported doors made from very thin metal.

Vault Pro offers several models that achieve ballistic resistance up to level 10. Enhanced ballistic resistance is provided by thicker American-made steel and robust steel door frames. Our Elite series vault doors are rated at ballistic resistance level 6. The Atlas series, featuring a 1/2" solid steel front plate, boasts level 9 protection. Our Titan series doors are crafted with a solid 1" steel front plate, reaching level 10 resistance. For maximum defense, the Monster series vault doors incorporate a 2" solid steel front plate, also rated at level 10. Additionally, we offer AR-500 steel liners to further enhance ballistic resistance.

  • Q. Are Vault Doors Fireproof?

Certain vault doors are classified as fire-rated, while many standard or security-only models do not offer this feature. Fire-rated options generally incorporate internal insulation materials such as layers of fireboard and ceramic blankets, complemented by expanding intumescent smoke seals that expand to impede heat and flames.

All Vault Pro vault doors provide fire protection ranging from 40 minutes to over 2 hours, depending on the model. Each door is meticulously hand-fitted to the frame with a precision tolerance of 1/16", creating a gap that enhances resistance against fire and pry attacks. Our Elite, Atlas, Titan, and Monster series doors are equipped with a step system and dual Palusol® heat sealing intumescent gaskets for high fire security.

  • Q. What level of burglary protection do vault doors provide?

The best vault doors have heavy-duty steel front plate, solid steel frames, multiple heavy-duty steel locking bolts, and hard plate and multiple relockers to protect against drill through attacks. Every Vault Pro vault door is hand fitted to the door frame with a tolerance of 1/16". This gap protects against fire and pry attacks. Our Elite, Atlas, Titan, and Monster series doors feature a step-system for added security, All vault doors are built on heavy duty frames and feature internal re-lockers to protect against drilling attempts.

  • Q. Do Vault Doors have an internal release mechanism?

All Vault Pro vault doors come standard with an internal release to prevent being locked inside the vault room or shelter. Simply slide the internal release to unlock the door from the inside.

  • Q. Can vault doors be customized for size, swing direction, hardware, and locking options?

Yes. We offer vault doors in many standard sizes, but can build vault doors for any type of installation. Being the manufacturer, we can build vault doors to virtually any size and configuration desired. For more information and a free quote please contact us.

  • Q. What physical and sizing factors do I need to consider?

    • Are my current or planned walls (concrete, reinforced steel, or wood framing) capable of supporting the substantial weight of this door?

    • What are the necessary rough-opening dimensions for the frame?  Depending on installation type the standard R.O. (rough opening) is 1" higher and 1/2" wider than the vault door to allow the door to slide into place.

    • Does the clear interior walkthrough height and width permit me to easily transport large items or equipment indoors?  Clear thru space is the actual walk-thru space when the vault door is fully open. The frame can take up 5 to 7 inches depending on whether it is an outswing or inswing model door.

    • Should I opt for an inswing or outswing door based on the available interior space and safety for emergency exits?  In-swinging vault doors are preferred for tornado and storm shelter rooms to prevent debris from blocking the door from opening.

    • Is the hinge placement (left or right) properly aligned with the design of my room and the adjacent walls? We build vault doors with hinges on the right or left depending on your requirements.

  • Q. How are vault doors installed, and what structural requirements are needed?

Vault doors are typically installed by a local contractor. Our vault doors can be installed in concrete filled block walls, poured concrete walls, or in standard wood frame walls.

4¼"x½" wedge anchors are recommended to hold the door securely in place.

For additional information we have complete installation guides available to download on our site. Please contact us for additional information.

  • Q. What type of vault door is best for a hidden vault door?

Inswing vault doors are the premier option for a concealed vault room entry. The door is set back within the frame, enabling the installation of an outer door or a false facade to mask the vault door. While outswing vault doors can be utilized, they necessitate modifications to the outer wall to ensure that the outer door does not interfere with the vault door.
